Every month Copper Shores chooses a Do Good In the Copper Country Volunteer of the Month. For the first time, it’s one of our very own, Dave Saunders. Read his nomination below!
"Dave helps set up for our Chassell Congregate Site every Monday and Wednesday. No matter the weather, Dave is there year round to make coffee and set the table for all of our congregate site attendees. Not only does he get there an hour ahead of everyone else, but he also helps during the serving of the food by carrying plates to fellow seniors who are less mobile. He is a bright ray of sunshine and ALWAYS has a smile on his face. Copper Country Senior Meals so appreciates his dedication and commitment, as do the seniors that attend each week. Thank you, Dave, for making our work easier and our day brighter."
Berry Good Day for Picking
Meals On Wheels employees recently took to the fields of Gierke Blueberry Farm where they set out to pick 75 pounds of blueberries. The weather was perfect for an afternoon of berry picking, a bit of light snacking and gathering food that can be given to every senior we serve. The blueberries will go out fresh this week, and be used for yogurt parfaits and blueberry sauce for pannukakku throughout the fall and winter. The employees enjoyed being out so much that they picked 86 pounds of blueberries by day's end. We want to thank Gierke Farm for allowing us to come out there and pick berries. They donated ALL of the berries that we picked to Meals on Wheels!
Emily Grant’s Last Day
We are saddened to see her go, but excited to watch her succeed. Emily’s last day will be September 4th. During her time, she delivered for the Houghton route, dropping off 19 - 24 meals a day. She has jumped in wherever she has been needed, and has gone above and beyond taking care of the Kitchen Garden.
“She has contributed the joy that she brings to both her coworkers and the seniors she delivers to. Her overall happy attitude is contagious.” - Rich Simpson, Operations Director
Golden Treasure in the Kitchen Garden
The staff at Meals on Wheels have been working hard all season, tending to our very own garden. Now that the summer is wrapping up, the potatoes are ready! The staff had so much fun digging for these golden beauties in the soil, and can’t wait to give them to the seniors.
LFPA Visit to Copper Country Producers
This month we had a special visit! Chief Operating Officer Marsha Keefer of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, the group that provided us with a $1.28 million grant, made her way to the Copper Country. During her visit, Keefer toured the kitchen, offices and some of the local farms that Copper Shores is partnering with for the grant. She loved the facilities and was greatly impressed with how far ahead we are in farm to table sustainability.
Meals on Wheels is currently hiring for a float position. The position may include kitchen assistant duties, delivery driver duties and helping at Congregate Meal Sites. If you are as passionate about serving seniors as we are, spread the word and consider applying. To learn more about the job opportunity, click here.
