We surveyed our participants in early 2025 to better understand the impact of our meal deliveries and daily check-ins. The results spoke volumes.
Noteworthy Concert to benefit Meals on Wheels
Flash back to the Beatles and pull out your best 60s and 70s attire! Join Noteworthy, a local women's barbershop ensemble, for their annual concert on Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Noteworthy is collecting free-will offerings and this year, all proceeds go to Meals on Wheels!
Generous donation from retired educators
Our program director, Kathleen Harter, recently gave a luncheon presentation to the local chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. After presenting, the group voted and approved to donate $500 to Meals on Wheels to support the work we do for our elder community!
Renovations under way on Water Street
821 Water Street, home of our Meals on Wheels program, is undergoing renovations to improve accessibility and increase office space. With all Copper Shores programming under one roof, we hope to increase cross-service collaboration and improve the quality of our program offerings. At some point in the coming months we expect a disruption to services for about one week. When dates and details are known, we will update the community. We will have frozen meals available for any downtime our kitchen has.
Building long-term support for elder nutritional services
We’re aiming to have a proposal for an elder nutrition millage on an upcoming ballot in Houghton County, one of only five counties in the state without one. If it passes, this millage will provide the needed funding to allow meaningful expansion of our senior meal services in the county. We hope voters will have the opportunity to say yes or no to an elder nutrition millage later this year. Read more about why this is important on our website.
Staff Spotlight - Emily Rogers
Emily is one of the few staff at Copper Shores Meals on Wheels that has done every single job within the program. As a float position, her work is varied and requires a flexibility and willingness to fill in and support the work of others while caring for the seniors. Her duties are always changing and we appreciate her ability to quickly adapt to new situations, assist during emergencies, and be a kind and reassuring person for our senior community. Emily's background in the arts and humanities and her varied roles help her bring a unique perspective and creativity to the work she does each day. You can find Emily delivering meals, prepping salads, washing dishes, packing cold sides or hosting a Meet & Eat site. Copper Shores is grateful for all that Emily does to brighten each day, whether it be with fellow staff or the seniors receiving a meal. Thank you, Emily!
