GivingTuesday highlights this month’s newsletter, but it’s more than that as we dive into our Little Brothers partnership, highlight the upcoming menu and meet Scott Sakkinen!
#GiveCopperCountry is now accepting donations for Meals on Wheels through GivingTuesday, which is December 3 this year. We rely on community generosity like yours to feed more than 300 seniors every day.
We are finishing the year strong, providing at least one locally sourced ingredient in every meal, for the fifth month in a row! Check out the holiday-worthy meals now.
Meals on Wheels will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29, 2024. Frozen meals for Thursday and Friday will be delivered earlier in the week.
Preparing pounds of produce
Our kitchen staff processed 69 pounds of peppers and nearly 300 pounds of squash earlier this month! We are so excited to be able to serve this local produce to seniors, all winter long!
LFPA Plans
Thank you to all the incredible local farmers who joined us this month to discuss the $1.28 Local Food Purchase Agreement program and plans for the 2025 growing season!
Hats for Hope
We are working with Hats for Hope again, providing hand made mittens, hats, scarves and more to seniors during the cold winter months.
In the Kitchen with Inez
After losing her limb to vascular disease, Inez found it more difficult to move and cook for herself, relying on Meals on Wheels for nutrition and connection as she adjusted to her new life. Read Inez’s story.
Little Brothers, Big Impact
We are working with Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly for the holidays! Meals on Wheels has purchased ingredients for Little Brothers’ Thanksgiving dinner, including multiple turkeys, that will help feed hundreds of seniors in the Copper Country on Thanksgiving Day.
Staff Spotlight: Scott Sakkinen
Scott has been delivering meals to seniors in Keweenaw County and northern Houghton County for the past two years. He is always kind, patient and professional in his meal deliveries. For many seniors, daily living can be a place of uncertainty and frustration, but with Scott's daily visit and his consistent approach, seniors are being cared for through his service in providing a nutritious meal each day. The care he has for each senior is greatly appreciated and we are thankful for Scott's commitment to the organization and the work he does everyday.
