We have felt extremely grateful, especially the last few months, as countless community members like you have taken part in supporting our program. We celebrated the third annual Bingo Bonanza at The Bluffs, partnered with the rapidly growing event Geek U.P. and held our annual foundation-wide fundraising soirée, all in benefit of our Meals on Wheels program.
Bingo lovers brought in nearly $3,000 in just two hours of fun, and local sponsors and soirée attendees gave more than $60,000 - enough to feed 21 seniors for a year! Then the week after our soirée, we had a generous community member, who prefers to remain anonymous, provide a $30,000 donation to the program. We're also excited to let you know we're once again part of GivingTuesday! Donations will be accepted for that in mid November.
Thanks to supporters like you, we’ve increased delivery route capacity, and in late September, officially cleared the waiting list we’ve had for months. In early October, we began offering Meet & Eat twice a week in Lake Linden to meet the growing demand.
This month has also brought some tough news for many seniors in our community as the USDA has ordered states to pause the distribution of November SNAP benefits. This is a problem we're watching closely, and we will be doing our best to support our seniors who receive those benefits. We did hear this week that Double Up Food Bucks program is expanding in response to this. If seniors need help, they are always recommended to call our office at 1 (906) 483-1155 or dial 2-1-1 on their phone.
Work continues in the kitchen as we prepare for the end of the growing season. With the last deliveries of fresh produce coming in, our cooks are slicing, dicing and freezing food for the winter. We aim to feed seniors locally sourced, nutrient packed ingredients as often as possible, all year long. Check out some of the local offerings in November's menu!
This month’s menu also features several ingredients donated by the Rock Harbor Lodge on Isle Royale. We’re excited to make sure none goes to waste! The big highlight this month comes from our friends at Krupp's as they're once again making a large donation to feed Copper Country seniors a local favorite - Krupp's Pasties!
All of the greatness coming out of the kitchen wouldn’t be possible without team members like Dick Cortez. He is currently a Food Service Specialist, and he’s been with us for five years. Dick is always ready to step up and lend a helping hand in any kitchen role. From processing produce to making sure each food tray is properly sealed for transportation, he has a hand in preparing every meal. Dick can always be found with a smile on his face, spreading his contagious optimism, and joy for the program and seniors.
Your generosity and enthusiasm helps us feed neighbors in need. Thank you for your continued support of our program.
