Thanks to support from the $1.28 million LFPA grant, we are able to purchase lettuce, blueberries, bison, beef, pork and more, all in the Upper Peninsula. Our work with local producers continues in September, as we bring seniors in Copper Shores Meals on Wheels fresh, nutritionally balanced and flavor-packed meals.
Nearly every meal this month includes at least one locally sourced ingredient. Many of the meals include vegetables that are so fresh they won’t be harvested and delivered until the week of. Our work with farmers not only better nourishes the seniors, but also helps local farmers reduce food waste by taking whatever they have to offer before it goes bad. Our cooks often mix and match produce from multiple farms, providing seniors with a wide variety of meals that help them get all of the proper nutrients they need.
This September, seniors can enjoy many local flavors, including:
- September 3 - Pork dinner bowl with potatoes and vegetables, and birthday cake, prepared with pork from Buried Stone Farms.
- September 4 - Chicken salad, vegetables, and a whole wheat roll, made using lettuce from Ghost House Farm and Ransom Family Farm.
- September 16 - Pannukakku, turkey sausage, potatoes and syrup, served with potatoes from Johnson's Potato Farm.
- September 19 - Sweet and sour pork, rice, stir fry vegetables and blueberry crumble, prepared with blueberries from Pancho’s Blueberry Farm.
- September 24 - Cheeseburger, potato wedges, vegetables, and a fruit and yogurt parfait, prepared with beef from Frozen Farms Co. and potatoes from Johnson’s Potato Farm.
