Copper Shores Bridges has been nominated for Community Contributor of the Year at the 2026 SparkPlug Awards, put on by the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. The SparkPlug Awards are held annually to reflect on and celebrate the amazing accomplishments and achievements of community members, businesses and agencies that served the Keweenaw over the last year.

This nomination comes on the heels of welcoming the largest incoming group of participants to date. For the first time, the Bridges team is operating two Getting Ahead classes at once, helping more people than ever gain hope, build stability and begin their comeback.

“I am deeply honored that our Bridges Out of Poverty program has been nominated for a SparkPlug Award,” said Bridges Program Coordinator Rich Simpson. “This recognition affirms the meaningful work being done every day to strengthen our community and support individuals and families as they build more stable, thriving futures.”

Bridges serves as a stepping stone to greater opportunities and a brighter future. See how the program has helped individuals like Ashlee, Cheyenne, Danielle and Angela rewrite their future stories.

“It is truly a privilege to help bring hope, opportunity and encouragement to people who are working hard to improve their lives,” said Simpson.

Nomination for Community Contributor of the Year

"I am nominating the Copper Shores Bridges Program for the Community Contributor of the Year Award. This program is a vital force in the community, dedicated to empowering individuals and breaking the cycle of poverty through education, support, and resource building.

I have firsthand experience with the profound impact of this work, as I am a proud graduate of both the ‘Getting Ahead’ and ‘Financial Bootcamp’ programs. The skills and resources I gained have significantly improved my life, offering a pathway to greater social stability.

The program's reach extends beyond individual success. Under the coordination of Rich Simpson, Copper Shores Bridges is actively cultivating future leaders. We are currently working to establish a peer support group, which is designed to convert newfound social stability into long-term community leadership. I have witnessed similar transformations in the lives of many others who have gone through the Bridges programs and classes.

By focusing on deep, sustainable change, the Copper Shores Bridges Program is not just helping individuals; it is strengthening the entire community. It is truly deserving of recognition for its commitment to making the Keweenaw area a better, more stable place for all."
