Copper Shores invests in trail access & accessibility with 2026 Recreation Grant

Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is proud to introduce the recipients of its 2026 Community Recreation and Facilities Grant. This restructured grant program now supports larger, long-term capital projects that expand access to recreation, promote physical and mental well-being, and strengthen community spaces across the region.

This year's funded projects will improve trail access, renovate community recreation facilities and create more inclusive outdoor experiences for all.

Meet the recipients

Copper Harbor Trails ClubKeweenaw Point Trail Completion • $50,000

Copper Harbor Trails Club is creating safe and sustainable public access to Montreal Falls, replacing hazardous, informal routes with a permanent non-motorized trail that improves outdoor recreation, public health and environmental stewardship. They are on Phase 3.3, finishing the 7.5-mile Montreal Corridor, which completes the 30-mile Keweenaw Point Trail loop, providing permanent and equitable access for walking, hiking and biking for future generations.

Mountain Lions ClubAdventure Mountain Chalet Renovations • $52,642

Adventure Mountain offers a variety of affordable recreational opportunities for those that live in and around Ontonagon County, with a year-round chalet that supports those seeking physical activity, health and community well-being. As Adventure Mountain grows in popularity, renovations will preserve the safe, accessible and sustainable community recreation facility for residents of Ontonagon, Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties for decades to come.

Charter Township of Calumet • Swedetown Chalet Universal Access and Expansion • $500,000

The Swedetown Chalet is undergoing renovations to improve universal accessibility, ADA-compliance and help eliminate barriers to outdoor recreation, which reduces social isolation, and supports physical and mental health. Expanding and updating the chalet provides equitable access to recreation, shelter and amenities while supporting increased participation in year-round outdoor activities for residents and visitors of all abilities.

Together, these projects represent a significant investment in the health and vitality of the Copper Country. By supporting accessible recreation, preserving outdoor spaces and enhancing gathering places, these organizations are helping create healthier, more connected communities where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity and shared experiences.
