“This initial step of expansion would not have been possible without the support of our community,” Meals on Wheels Program Director Jessica Mills said. “We’re so thankful that our community showed their support for our senior neighbors, friends and family members.”
Meals will be hosted at the Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Hall, the Laird Township Hall in Alston, and the Sidnaw Community Hall during winter and Duncan Township Hall in Kenton during summer. Additional details will be shared by Copper Shores as they are finalized.
The additional Meet & Eat sites are just a portion of program expansion. Eight months ago, Copper Shores Meals on Wheels was part of the one-in-three Meals on Wheels programs across the nation with a waitlist. Thanks to the passage of the Elder Nutrition Millage, the program has welcomed more seniors to existing delivery routes and eliminated the waiting list, now serving 360 seniors every day. That’s 60 more than this time last year.
“This expansion is already having an incredibly meaningful impact on seniors in our community,” Mills added. “We said last summer that we planned to make sure all of Houghton County has the opportunity to be part of this program, and we’re continuing on that mission now."
Meet & Eat creates opportunities for older adults to connect, share meals and find community, reducing isolation, supporting independence, and strengthening the overall health and wellness of the community. This service is free for anyone 60 years or older. Additional sites are currently offered in Mohawk, Hancock, Lake Linden and Chassell.
