April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Victim Support is proud to join in. Throughout the month, the Victim Support team is mobilizing to bring greater awareness to community members, helping to dismantle misconceptions and barriers that stop survivors from seeking support.
“There are countless myths about sexual assault,” said Ayla LaRoe, Copper Shores victim advocate. “By starting conversations, being open about the topic in our daily lives and better understanding the effects sexual assault has on our community, we can start to create a real impact.”
Earlier this month, Victim Support took part in Start By Believing Day, taking the pledge with local law enforcement to believe survivors when they come forward. This week the team is joining Michigan Tech Public Safety for Cover the Cruiser, allowing students to leave words of encouragement on a public safety vehicle and learn more about the resources available to them. Later, Victim Support is participating in Denim Day to fight myths surrounding victim blaming, before closing off the month with the Puppy Parade.
“Advocating for something you believe in doesn't have to be difficult,” said LaRoe. “It can be as simple as walking your dog and connecting with others over a similar cause, and ultimately letting survivors know that they have people here for them when they feel the most alone. I think it’s important that we show up for each other, especially in the most difficult times.”
For those bringing dogs to the Puppy Parade, Copper Shores asks that you check in when you arrive to pick up a free bandana for your dog. These bandanas help keep every person and dog safe by indicating their comfort level around others; green meaning people and dogs can approach your dog, yellow meaning you would like people to ask before approaching, and red meaning you need space from people and other dogs.
Even the smallest acts of support can make a meaningful difference for survivors. Together, we can create a community where survivors feel seen, supported and believed.
