Behind the warm welcomes, delicious meals and lively conversations at the new Meet & Eat sites is Amanda Karlzen, whose care and compassion has helped make these community gathering places a success.
Karlzen moved to the area in 2023, discovering that winter does not, in fact, end after Christmas. Trading in the hustle, bustle and heat of California for the cool waters, outdoors and kindhearted people of the Copper Country, Karlzen spends her time hiking, foraging and taking far too many photos of nature.
When Copper Shores Meals on Wheels finalized plans for the first expansion of Meet & Eat services in southern Houghton County, Karlzen made the move from part-time route driver to full-time food service specialist. The opportunity gave her a chance to play a larger role in connecting older adults with nutritious meals and fostering community.
“I always want to reach more people so the prospect of opening new Meet & Eat sites really interested me,” said Karlzen.
In her new position, Karlzen runs weekly Meet & Eat operations in Twin Lakes and Alston, preparing the dining space, serving meals and creating a welcoming atmosphere where community members can connect.
So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Both sites opened with strong attendance and have continued to see consistent participation each week.
“People are so excited to see each other,” said Karlzen. “They’re catching up with friends and neighbors they haven’t seen in years. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard ‘I haven’t seen you in forever!’”
The small moments of connection that Karlzen helps create reflect Meals on Wheels' larger commitment to fighting hunger and reducing isolation for older adults. Whether it's sharing a meal, reconnecting with old friends or welcoming someone new to the table, each gathering strengthens the community.
