Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is excited to welcome Victim Advocate Bonnie Johnson to the Victim Support team. With a rich background in social services, education and community support, Johnson brings both professional expertise and deep personal understanding to the work of victim advocacy.
“Her patience, compassion and creativity have been invaluable as she supports children and their families throughout their journey,” Victim Support Program Director Virginia Lambert said. “Bonnie is especially enthusiastic about creating a safe, supportive and healing experience for the young people we work with.”
After returning to school, Johnson earned her associate’s degree in Human Services from Suomi College, then a bachelor's degree in Psychology, with a focus on Early Childhood, from Northern Michigan University. She later pursued additional training, including her EMT and CNA licenses through Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton.
Though Johnson raised her children in Wisconsin, her story has strong ties in the Upper Peninsula. Born and raised near Marquette, Johnson has been visiting family in the Copper Country her entire life. When her kids grew and began their own adult lives, Johnson decided it was time to return to her roots.
In her free time, Johnson enjoys looking for starry night skies and the northern lights, sitting on the deck with coffee, watching her chickens and walking her dog through crunchy autumn leaves. Beyond the simple pleasures of the Copper Country, it's the opportunity to give back that has shaped Johnson's career path.
From working in a Head Start program during her psychology practicum, to directing a childcare center, to serving as a paraprofessional and special education teacher, Johnson's career has consistently centered on supporting children, families and communities. That thread continues at Copper Shores, where she helps victims of sexual assault, child abuse and more, build a support network as they navigate healing.
"I hope to help victims and survivors through that dark point in their life,” said Johnson. “When everything feels unsure, I want to help them see the light.”
Johnson's connection to this work goes far beyond her career. With firsthand experience in many of life's hardships and the strength it takes to move through them, she brings a deep well of empathy and resilience to her role.
"Something bad that happens to you doesn't define you,” said Johnson. “There is help out there. There are resources for you to utilize and regain the control you need, where you need it, when you need it. You can find your power and live a successful life."
Johnson hopes to leave a lasting, positive impact with those she has served; an impact that strengthens the resilience and well-being of the community for years to come. With her wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to helping others, Johnson is a powerful addition to the Victim Support team, and to the community she's proud to call home.
