Five reasons you should take QPR Training

September 11, 2025 | By Emilie Jacques

QPR Training 1x1QPR stands for question, persuade, and refer; three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Copper Shores Outreach & Education offers QPR Training free of cost to individuals, agencies and organizations in the Copper Country. Those who receive QPR Training are taught to identify the known warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to respond.

Why should you take QPR Training?

  1. You will learn to recognize suicide warning signs. QPR Training teaches you how to identify both direct and subtle signals that a person may be considering suicide. This includes verbal cues, changes in behavior and situational factors, allowing you to identify a potential crisis before it escalates.
  2. You will build the confidence to act. Many people are afraid to talk about suicide because they are unsure what to say or fear they might make the situation worse. QPR Training provides a simple, three-step action plan that demystifies the process and builds the confidence to intervene effectively and compassionately.
  3. You can offer hope and save a life. Just like CPR provides immediate care in a medical emergency, QPR is an emergency mental health intervention that can save a life. The training equips you with the skills to ask about suicide, persuade the person to get help and guide them to appropriate resources, creating a positive and hopeful intervention.
  4. You can help reduce mental health stigma. Talking about suicide openly and without judgment is a critical step in prevention. QPR training empowers you to initiate conversations about mental health and suicide, which helps to break down negative perceptions and create a more accepting and connected community.
  5. You can strengthen your community's support network. Anyone can become a QPR Gatekeeper, a friend, family member, teacher or colleague, and help build a broader safety net of support. By training people from all backgrounds, QPR works to ensure that more individuals are prepared to help someone in crisis, from early recognition to long-term care.
