With more than a decade of experience telling the unique stories of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, Michael H. Babcock has joined the staff of Portage Health Foundation. Babcock started this summer as Marketing & Communications Coordinator.
"We expect him to be an engaged member of our staff and an additional community resource," Executive Director Kevin Store said. "I've worked with him before professionally and in a volunteer setting, and his passion for our community is clearly evident."
Babcock has a Master of Science degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from Golden Gate University, and an undergraduate degree in Scientific and Technical Communication from Michigan Technological University. He started his career as a reporter with The Daily Mining Gazette, before spending three years at UP Health System-Portage and the last five years at Finlandia University. His volunteer work includes being a long-time committee member for the Canal Run and Calumet Wolverines Hockey Club, assisting the county with crisis communication during the Father's Day Flood in 2018 and serving on the Local Organizing Committee for Kraft Hockeyville USA.
"The vital role Portage Health Foundation plays in our community was made abundantly clear as the organization led the charge in helping our community recover after the devastating flooding last summer," Babcock said. "I couldn't be more excited to be part of this organization, and help shape its future as we work to improve the health of our community with a mix of short- and long-term solutions."
Babcock's duties at the foundation include public relations, marketing, writing, photography, social media and maintaining the organization's website. He'll be playing a key role in the third annual Giving Tuesday campaign in which the foundation is matching up to $100,000 in donations to non-profit organizations.
