Five UP Campus medical students receive Copper Shores Tuition Assistance Scholarship

March 13, 2024 | By Admin

Copper Shores Community Health Foundation has provided tuition assistance scholarships to five medical students at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, UP Region Campus. This is the second year for the scholarship. The medical student recipients include Kyle Burton, Katrina Elzinga, David Klemet, Lindsay Sandell and Mackenzie Suarez.

COPPER-SHORES-Awardees-Fall-2023Scholarships are awarded based on criteria including the medical student’s desire to practice in the Upper Peninsula after residency training, students in their second, third or fourth year of medical school and students who will be training at the UP Region Campus for their final two years of medical school. Preference is given to medical students from Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties. Secondary preference goes to medical students from the UP, and tertiary preference goes to medical students who are not from the UP but have intentions to practice in the area.

“Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine is fortunate to have this medical education partnership with Copper Shores Community Health Foundation,” said Community Assistant Dean of the UP Campus, Dr. Stuart Johnson. “These scholarships are given to students training in our rural communities, increasing their likelihood of practicing medicine in the Upper Peninsula once training is complete.”

The Copper Shores Tuition Assistance Scholarship is an investment in the future through its support of medical students who want to return and practice here. Supporting medical students as they train in their clinical curriculum rotations across the UP helps bridge a connection to our future generation of skilled health care professionals.

"We're happy to support the educational pursuits of these young medical professionals and hope that our investment in them will someday reward this community by their service and investment in it," said Kevin Store, President/CEO of Copper Shores.
