Community invited to Michigan Crime Victims’ Rights 101
April 21, 2026 | By Emilie Jacques
Copper Shores Victim Support invites community members to a special presentation on crime victims’ rights with Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Houghton County, Dan Helmer, offering insight into available resources, the justice process and ways our community can better support victims of crime. Michigan Crime Victims’ Rights 101 takes place on Thursday, May 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Michigan Technological University in Fisher Hall, Room 139, offered at no cost to attend.
This presentation covers a variety of topics, including trends in the area, the rights of victims and the resources available to them, giving community members a more holistic view of the unique challenges the Copper Country faces. The presentation will be followed by a panel of local experts, featuring Helmer, Copper Shores victim advocates and other local service providers, offering the opportunity to learn, ask questions and engage in meaningful conversation with those working directly in the local response network.
Creating a safer, more supportive community requires everyone’s involvement. When individuals, organizations and institutions each do their part, the community helps build an environment where victims feel seen, believed and supported. This collective effort not only strengthens pathways to healing but also helps prevent future harm by fostering awareness, accountability, and most importantly, connection.
Michigan Crime Victims’ Rights 101 reflects the larger mission of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Recognized since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has focussed on empowering communities by removing barriers to justice and strengthening victim-centered policies. All are welcome to join Copper Shores Victim Support and work together to raise awareness and strengthen support for victims of crime in the Copper Country.
