Green Beans from Ghost House FarmsLike many local growers and farmers, Copper Shores Meals on Wheels is planning for next year and how to procure local foods for our senior clients. This past June, the nonprofit received a $1,289,510 grant through the Food Bank Council of Michigan as part of the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program. This funding is used to support and improve the resilience of local supply chains by purchasing healthy and nutritious foods and beverages. These local foods are being incorporated into the monthly menus that we serve area seniors. This grant helps Copper Shores Meals on Wheels serve the best quality food that is unique to our area. The nonprofit is excited to expand local food producing partnerships and help build a more sustainable food system throughout Upper and Lower Michigan.

If you are a local food producer, farmer, or grower and live within 400 miles of Hancock, we invite you to join us at one of two upcoming meetings to learn more about this grant and how you can be involved. The two meetings offer a virtual Zoom webinar option or to meet in person at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton, MI. The Monday, December 4 meeting is from 3 to 5 p.m. and the Wednesday, December 6 meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration for the virtual meet on Zoom is open now here.

Copper Shores Meals on Wheels is a home-delivered and congregate meal program that serves Houghton and Keweenaw counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
